Sen. Kemp Hannon Reminds Drivers About New State Law

Saturday, January 21, 2012 From Patch.com

Sen. Kemp Hannon, R-Garden City, reminds all drivers that a new state law requires all drivers to move over or slow down when towing and recovery services are flashing their amber hazard lights while working on the shoulder of the road.

“Recent roadside deaths include a man working on a road striping crew, as well as a tow truck operator tending to a disabled vehicle,” Hannon said. “This law will mandate that a driver approaching any vehicle with flashing amber lights must slow down or move over.”

Drivers who violate the Move Over law will face a fine of up to $275, plus a court surcharge of $85, and could face up to 15 days in jail. The driver could also be assessed three points on his or her driving record.

“Those who operate tow trucks, highway maintenance trucks or other construction vehicles face serious risks every day, all in the commission of their jobs,” Hannon said. “The new law seeks to enhance their safety by requiring motorists to slow down and give a wide berth when coming upon the vehicles with flashing amber lights.”
